Spiritual Warfare

Spiritual Warfare

Spiritual warfare is a concern for each and every individual alive on the planet earth. The problem is that most people have never heard of it, or realize that they are even being affected by it. So what is spiritual warfare exactly?

Lets break this down into simple terms:

The dictionary defines the word spiritual as “of, relating to, or consisting of spirit; incorporeal. The word incorporeal is defined as “not composed of matter; having no material existence. The word warfare is defined as “engagement in or the activities involved in war or conflict.”

From these definitions, we understand that spiritual warfare means that we are engaged in war or conflict with incorporeal beings. Who are the incorporeal beings that are waging war against us? God has told us in Ephesians 6:10-12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Devil is defined in the dictionary as “the supreme spirit of evil; Satan”. Ruler means “a person exercising government or dominion”. Authority means “somebody or something with official power”. Power in this context is defined as a supernatural being, deity, or force”. Force is “a person or thing regarded as exerting power or influence.”

God has given us several scriptures in the Bible pertaining to Satan, and his intentions toward mankind. Jesus said in John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” In 1 Peter 5:8 God tells us “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”By now you are probably asking yourself “how do we know that these attacks are real, and how would an attack manifest?” An attack could manifest in any way you can possibly think of:

  • addiction
  • depression
  • lust
  • financial trouble
  • sickness
  • disease
  • anger
  • marital problems
  • sexual perversion
  • negative thinking
  • never being able to progress
  • bad dreams or nightmares
  • fruitless efforts in life
  • failure at the edge of success
  • mental illness
  • fear
  • anxiety
  • never being able to be married (failed relationships)
  • spinsterhood
  • sudden changes in behavior or disposition
  • evil thoughts
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • any stubborn problem in your life

The above are just a few examples. As you can see, spiritual attack is very serious. In the Bible, Job 1:13-18 describes some of the attacks that Satan inflicted on Job. These attacks are not only limited to Job, but can happen to anyone.

So what do we do about these spiritual attacks? The Bible tells us that we need to put on the armor of God. How do we put on the armor of God? The first and foremost thing a person must do in order to put on the armor of God is to first make Jesus Christ Lord over their life, and accept Him into their heart by faith. By accepting the gift of salvation bestowed to us when Jesus died on the Cross and rose from the dead, we become heirs to the riches of God’s glorious inheritance, and His incomparably great power for us who believe.

The word bestow as defined in the dictionary means “confer or present (an honor, right, or gift).” The word heir means “a person legally entitled to the property or rank of another on that person’s death”.

Jesus physically died on the cross. For those who declare with their mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in their heart that God raised Him from the dead, they are saved, and become heirs as described above to God’s glorious inheritance and His incomparably great power. This great power defeats Satan and his attacks. Those who do not accept Jesus as Lord and Savior are completely defenseless and defeated by Satan and demons.

God tells us to put on His armor in Ephesians 6:11. He also tells us in Ephesians 6:10 to be strong in Him and in His mighty power. What are the pieces of armor we are to put on for battle? Ephesians 6:14-17 says ” Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”.

The word truth as defined in the dictionary means “that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality.” Righteous means “characterized by uprightness or morality”. Gospel means ” the teaching or revelation of Christ; a thing that is absolutely true”. Peace means “freedom from disturbance; tranquility; mental or emotional calm”. Faith means “complete trust or confidence in someone or something”. Salvation means “deliverance from sin and it’s consequences; preservation or deliverance from harm, ruin, or loss”. The definition of sword is “a weapon with a long metal blade and a hilt with a hand guard, used for thrusting or striking. The word spirit means “short for Holy Spirit”.

Jesus shows us in Matthew 4:1-10 how to use the sword of the spirit against Satan and his attacks. Matthew 4:4 says “it is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Matthew 4:7 says “Jesus answered him, “it is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test’ ” Notice how Jesus says “it is written”, and then quotes a scripture pertaining to the attack. This is how we are to use God’s Word to defeat Satan and his attacks. Find a scripture that directly addresses the attack that you are having, and say it out loud. Keep doing this until you have thwarted the attack.

It is important to understand that certain behaviors, actions or practices can open a doorway and allow Satan to attack, or continue attacking. The Bible provides many examples of behaviors, actions or practices that are not of God, but are of Satan. Galatians 5:19 says “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you , as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

The word immorality as defined by the dictionary means “the state or quality of being immoral; wickedness”. Impure means “morally wrong, especially in sexual matters”. Debauchery is ” excessive indulgence in sex, alcohol, or drugs”. Idolatry means “the worship of idols”. Witchcraft is “the practice of magic, especially black magic; the use of spells and the invocation of spirits”. Hate is “intense dislike”. Discord means “disagreement between people”. The word jealous means “feeling or showing an envious resentment of someone or their achievements, possessions, or perceived advantages”. Rage is “violent uncontrollable anger”. The word selfish means “lacking consideration for other people; concerned chiefly with one’s own personal profit or pleasure”. Dissension means “disagreement that leads to discord”.  Faction is “a small organized dissenting group within a larger one, especially in politics”. Envy is “a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities, or luck”. Drunkenness is “the state of being drunk; intoxication’. An orgy is “a wild party characterized by excessive drinking and indiscriminate sexual activity”.

Another way that gives Satan authority to attack is through generational curses. An example of this could be if a relative from a previous generation was involved in the practice of witchcraft. That family member opened up a door to allow Satan to influence and attack not only them, but family members in future generations. An example of the manifestation of a generational curse could be an addiction to drugs or alcohol that seems to continue in a family line from generation to generation.

The good news is that Jesus has already defeated Satan when He died on the cross and rose from the dead. Jesus says in Revelation 1:18 “I am the living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. He also says in Luke 10:19 “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. We have the authority to use the power that we have received from Jesus as heirs. We must come to God and ask Him for forgiveness of our sins, and for the sins of our forefathers before us. God can sever the bonds from Satan, and remove all generational curses from our lives, and from the lives of our children and future generations.

We must repent from our sins, and turn away from all sinful activity.

The word repent as defined in the dictionary means to “feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one’s wrongdoing or sin.”

Understand that it is a choice to turn away from sin. Once we have made that choice, it is the power of God that will start to transform us, and change our thoughts and desires to match His will for our lives.

If you have not already received Jesus as Lord and Savior, I would encourage you to say the below prayer:

Father, it is written in Your Word that if I confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in my heart that You have raised Him from the dead, I shall be saved.  Therefore, Father, I confess that Jesus is my Lord.  I make Him Lord of my life right now.  I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead.  I renounce my past life with Satan and close the door to any of his devices.

I thank You for forgiving me of all my sin.  Jesus is my Lord, and I am a new creation.  Old things have passed away.  Now all things become new in Jesus’ name Amen.
